How to calculate fuel cost

To estimate the fuel cost of a trip, divide the total driving distance by your vehicle's fuel efficiency. This gives you the amount of fuel required for the trip. Multiply that amount by the current price of fuel to calculate your estimated total cost.

Fuel cost formula

Fuel Needed = Distance ÷ MPG

Fuel Cost = Fuel Needed × Gas Price

Example fuel cost calculation

If you plan to drive 500 miles in a vehicle that averages 30 MPG, you will need approximately 16.67 gallons of fuel. At $3.40 per gallon, the estimated fuel cost for the trip is approximately $56.67.

How can I reduce my fuel costs?

Maintaining proper tire pressure, avoiding unnecessary acceleration, reducing excess vehicle weight, and keeping your vehicle properly maintained can help improve fuel efficiency. Comparing fuel prices before a long trip can also reduce your overall travel costs.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate fuel cost for a trip?

Divide the trip distance by your vehicle's MPG to estimate the gallons of fuel required. Then multiply the gallons needed by the current gas price.

How much gas do I need for 500 miles?

It depends on your vehicle's fuel efficiency. A car averaging 30 MPG would use about 16.67 gallons to travel 500 miles.

What does cost per mile mean?

Cost per mile is the average amount spent on fuel for each mile driven. It is calculated by dividing total fuel cost by total distance.

Does this calculator include tolls or other travel costs?

No. This calculator estimates fuel costs only. For hotels, food, tolls, and other expenses, use the Road Trip Cost Calculator.
